If you want to edit computer games, you will need some tools. In this section we will talk about some, and tell you where to get them from. We also have various downloads to make skinning just that little bit easier, such as skin meshes and model files.

Image Editing
If you are going to make skins, you will need to be able to edit images on you PC. There are many programs for doing this, and here are a few of them.

2D Paint Packages:

-Probably the most widely known and used 2D package in the industry

Corel Photo-Paint [commercial] http://www.corel.com
-2D package from Corel

Jasc Paint Shop Pro [commercial] http://www.jasc.com/products/psp
-A more affordable 2D package, also widely used in skinning

procreate Painter [commercial] http://www.procreate.com/product/painter7
-Formerly known as Metacreations Painter. More of a real paint program, doesn't suit very well for skinning

The Gimp [free] http://www.gimp.org
-The infamous free 2D package, available for Linux as well as Microsoft OS's



2D/3D Paint Packages:

BodyPaint 3D [commercial] http://www.maxon.de/
-A competitor to the DeepPaint 3D program

DeepPaint 3D [commercial] http://www.us.righthemisphere.com/products/dp3d/index.htm
-A paint program which allows you to paint directly on to the 3D model

-The free, stripped down version of the popular 3D Studio Max by discreet

-Another widely used 3D package by Newtek

Maya [commercial] http://www.aliaswavefront.com/
-A more versatile 3D package from Alias|Wavefront, used in many films and such

-An affordable 3D modelling package

-The big brother of Nendo, also a very versatile package like Maya

-A simple modeling package by Izware that still manages to pack quite a punch due to it's sub-division modeling tools

 

Model Viewers
When you have finished your skin you will want to see it in game. However, sometimes this is a pain to do, so its better to see your work as you go along. These prgrams will help you do this.
